About Lewis Heritage & Lime Mortar

Lewis Heritage & Lime Mortar is a specialist conservation practice led by expert heritage mason Sean Lewis, dedicated to the correct repair and long‑term preservation of historic masonry across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, the Cotswolds, and Surrey. Our work is grounded in traditional lime craftsmanship, material science, and a detailed understanding of how historic buildings breathe, move, and age.

We focus exclusively on heritage repointing, conservation repairs, and the sensitive restoration of historic walls, using lime‑based materials chosen for compatibility with the building’s original fabric. Every project follows established conservation principles: diagnose the masonry accurately, intervene minimally, retain as much original material as possible, and ensure all new work supports the building’s long‑term health.

At the centre of our practice is The Lewis Framework™ — a structured conservation methodology designed to guide homeowners, surveyors, and heritage professionals through the correct assessment, preparation, and repointing of historic masonry. The Framework also underpins all conservation work carried out by Lewis Heritage & Lime Mortar, ensuring that every intervention follows recognised principles of traditional masonry repair.

“Alongside the Framework, all practical repointing undertaken by Lewis Heritage & Lime Mortar follows The Lewis Method™ — our conservation‑led approach to applying lime correctly to historic masonry.”

Our educational work is delivered through The Lewis Training System™, a dedicated platform created to raise standards in lime‑based conservation. The training focuses on the behaviour of lime, the breathability of historic masonry, and the long‑term consequences of inappropriate modern interventions. We teach both homeowners and professionals how to care for older buildings in a way that protects their significance, fabric, and future.

For homeowners seeking a detailed diagnostic assessment of their historic masonry, we provide a specialist conservation survey through our Heritage Survey — a structured evaluation designed to identify defects, moisture pathways, and the correct lime‑based interventions required for long‑term preservation.

Lewis Heritage & Lime Mortar operates with the same ethos found in museums, conservation trusts, and heritage institutions: traditional skills, evidence‑based practice, and a commitment to safeguarding historic buildings for generations to come.
